Ah, dry shampoo, a friend that’s always there in our time of need.
Whether it’s a quick, post-workout touch-up, or a “just one more day” plea from our salon fresh blowdry, this product is a life-saver in a lot of situations.
But what is dry shampoo, and how exactly does it work? In today’s blog, we’re demystifying dry shampoo to help you figure it out!
What is Dry Shampoo?
We all know that dry shampoo is a greasy hair day saviour, but what is the product itself?
This quick, miracle-working product helps to absorb grease, oil, and dirt from the hair and scalp, giving you an instant just-washed look even when you haven’t had time for a full hair wash.
Dry shampoo is usually made with a base of alcohol or starch like rice, aluminium, or tapioca, which helps it soak up all the bad stuff!
Coming in a powder, paste, or spray form, it's a versatile product that is most effective for hair that holds a lot of oil, and its versatility extends to its uses, too.
It’s perfect for a quick touch-up after a gym class, getting another day out of that much-loved salon blowdry, and adding volume or texture to hair for a day or night out.
Is Dry Shampoo Bad For Your Hair?
Now, we need to dispel some dry shampoo myths…
There is some speculation that dry shampoo can be bad for your hair, but don’t throw out all of your bottles yet!
As with anything, overuse can lead to problems, so it’s important to note that dry shampoo shouldn't be used as an alternative to regular hair washing (using all of your fave Give Me Cosmetics haircare products, of course!)
Depending on your hair and scalp types, experts suggest using dry shampoo once to twice a week.
Along with these thoughts, there has been speculation online on a possible connection between dry shampoo and cancer. These worries came about as a result of some tests done in America which found increased levels of Benzene in certain dry shampoo products.
Benzene is a carcinogen which could increase the risk of certain cancers, hence the connection between the two. However, that’s not to say that all dry shampoo contains this ingredient.
There are tonnes of dry shampoo products out there that don’t use Benzene, including the Give Me Cosmetics Skip The Wash Dry Shampoo!
